The first month of the Islamic Calendar, Muharram
Muslims arround the world, as well as in Canada observe Muharram. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic lunar Calendar. It is considered one of the four sacred months about which Allah (God) says in the Holy Quran: "The number of the months according to Allah is twelve months (mentioned) in the Book of Allah on the day in which He created heavens and the earth. Among these there are four sanctified".
Although Muharram is a sacred month in Islamic belief as it marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar, it is not considered a public holiday in Canada.
Because the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, Muharram moves from year to year when compared with the Gregorian calendar.
Monday, August 9th, 2021, is the begining of month Muharram, and most businesses in Canada follow regular Sunday opening hours.
In 2022, Muharram falls on Saturday, 30 July.
Muslims' customs in regard to Muharram in CANADA:
- A lot of muslims in Canada may choose to fast during Muharram, although fasting is
not obligatory.
- A lot of muslims increase their worship acts during Muharram, like engaging in voluntary prayer.
