Halloween in Canada is, traditionally, celebrated on October 31st. It has a very interesting history. According to Celtic beliefs, the spirits of the dead can come into the living world on the night of October 31. So, basically, they believed that the spirits and ghosts of the dead people could visit from the underworld and harm the living people or take them back with them. So what people do on Halloween is that they dresse up as spirits and ghosts if they go out at night in the hope that this would confuse the visiting spirits.
It was also thought that the dead spirits could bring messages to the living people on October 31. So what some unmarried women do for example is that pour molten lead into water to see what shape it forms, which might be a hint to know their future husband’s profession.
Children like Halloween so much and they look forward to dressing up, but adults also are increasingly getting into the spirit of Halloween. Halloween costumes do not always have to be scary as many children would like to dress up as super heros.
