Remembrance Day
Remembrance Day or as it is also called, Armistice Day, marks the date and time when armies stopped fighting WW1. It was November 11th, 1918 at 11 a.m. Arround 100,000 Canadian soldiers died in WW1 and WW2. On remembrance day members of the armed forces are commemorated
Remembrance Day is a federal statutory holiday in Canada with an exception of: Northwest Terretories, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec.
On the Remembrance Day, all government buildings fly the Canadian flag and people commemorate those who fought for Canada during a 2-minute silence at 11a.m. Ot is common that many people wear poppies before and on Remembrance Day to show their respect and support for Canadian troops. Poppies are generally handed out free but often a voluntary donation is given in exchange.
Although Remembrance Day is an important day, it is not celebrated in all the Canadian provinces and terretories. Bill C-597 aimed to make Remembrance Day a national legal holiday. It received a third reading but did not become law. In Canada, it is up to the provinces to decide what days are statutory holidays.
