Pursuant to The Shops Closing Act, in Newfoundland and Labrador 'NL', there are 10-shops closing holidays. These holidays are days in which businesses in wholesale and retail, not including exempt shops, must close to the public. They are not considered statutory holidays and they are not necessarily paid days. Other businesses in the province may choose to shut down on these days as well, however, they are not required to do so.
In NL there is observed also a Civic Day in certain cities and municipalities pursuant to The Shops Closing Act. These civic days are obviously not paid days off.
Pursuant to The Labour Standards Act, there are only 6 paid honidays. They are as follows:
*New Year’s Day,
*Good Friday,
*Canada Day (Memorial Day),
*Labour Day,
*Remembrance Day and
*Christmas Day.
Businesses are not prevented by anything from paying for additional days. However, they are not required to pay for more than the six paid holidays stated in The Labour Standards Act.
